This matters most the moment you plan to sell anything made with it — a t-shirt, a digital download, a KDP book — even if the resource itself didn’t cost you anything.

• The platform has a track record — established marketplaces like Creative Fabrica or Google Fonts are far safer bets than random download sites.
• The file format matches what you actually need (SVG for cutting, OTF/TTF for fonts, high-res PNG for print) rather than a vague “all formats included” claim.
• Reviews or download counts exist — a resource with zero history is harder to vet.

Free fonts are genuinely fine for most simple projects — bold sans-serifs and basic script fonts in particular have strong free options. Where premium starts to matter: elaborate script fonts with swash and ligature support, font families with many weights for consistent branding, and niche styles (specific genre fonts for KDP, holiday-specific display fonts) where the free selection is thinner. Start free, upgrade to premium only for the specific gaps you actually hit.
